Once the Scouts reach the age of joining the Venture Unit, responsibility for their meetings and programme of activities is almost entirely their own. The Unit, elects an Executive Committee from amongst its members and runs on a far more independent, but usually informal, basis than any other section of the Group. Unit meetings may take the form of games nights, video nights, discussions on recent news items and issues. Meetings are not necessarily confined to the Session House or to a Friday night, with the Unit rearranging its diary to suit exam timetables and party schedules.
Venture Scouting also has an element of achievement built into it, with Venture Scouts working towards the first progress badge in the section. The Venture Award which is based on 8 different sections that meets every part of our lives. Obviously, the emphasis is far more biased towards independence and initiative, and most members working for the award find it interesting, challenging but definitely rewarding. Venture Scouts also start work towards the highest award in Scouting, The Dolphin Award. Very few Ventures actually complete this award, as it really tests all the Scouting and “life” skills the individual has developed both in and out with the Movement, but for those who do persevere and complete all the rigorous requirements, usually by the age of 19, it is indeed something to be proud of for the rest of their lives.
The unit's motto is "Look Wide".
